How to Troubleshoot Common Vape Problems: Leaks, Dry Hits, Gurgling, and More

Even the best-designed vape has the occasional bad day. A pod leaks in your pocket. A pull tastes scorched. The device gurgles instead of vapes. The good news is that almost every common problem has a simple cause and an even simpler fix once you know what to look for.

Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide covering the four issues we see most often at the counter: leaks, dry hits, gurgling, and devices that won't fire. Work through the checks in order and you'll usually have your vape running again in five minutes.

🔍 Quick Diagnostic — Match Your Symptom to the Fix
Symptom Most Likely Cause First Thing to Try
Leaking from the bottom Overfill or damaged seal Reduce fill level, reseat pod
Burnt / scorched taste Coil not primed or worn out Re-prime, then replace if needed
Wet, bubbly sound E-liquid pooled in airflow Blow out the pod with tissue
No vapour, no LED Dead battery or pod connection Charge 30 min, clean contacts
Weak hits Low battery or worn coil Charge fully, check coil age

Problem 1: Your Vape Is Leaking

Leaks are almost always caused by one of three things: an overfilled pod, a damaged seal, or a pressure imbalance. Work through them in order.

1. Check the fill level. Pods and tanks have a max fill line for a reason. Overfilling floods the coil's airflow channels and pushes liquid out the bottom. Empty to just below the line and wipe the device dry.

2. Inspect the pod gasket. Small rubber seals can shift or tear during pod changes. Reseat the pod firmly. If the seal looks damaged or compressed, replace the pod.

3. Watch for pressure changes. Leaving a pod in a hot car, in a checked bag during a flight, or in direct sunlight changes the internal pressure and forces liquid out. Store devices upright at room temperature.

4. Check your draw technique. Hard, fast pulls on a low-wattage pod can pull excess liquid past the wick. Slow, steady draws prevent this.

Problem 2: You're Getting a Burnt or Dry Hit

A dry hit is the harsh, charred taste that happens when the coil heats up faster than the wick can absorb e-liquid. There are usually three culprits.

1. The coil isn't primed. New coils need to be saturated before first use. Drip 3–5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the coil's wicking holes, reinstall, then wait 5–10 minutes before vaping. Skipping this step is the #1 cause of burnt coils in new devices.

2. You're chain-vaping. Taking puff after puff without a break doesn't give the wick time to re-saturate between draws. Slow down — give the coil 15–30 seconds between puffs, especially on higher-wattage setups.

3. The coil is worn out. If hits are still burnt after priming and pacing yourself, the coil is done. Most pod coils last 7–14 days; most sub-ohm coils last 1–3 weeks depending on usage. Sweet and dessert flavours wear coils out faster than menthol or fruit.

Coil Type Typical Lifespan Sign It's Done
Pod Coil 7–14 days Burnt taste even after priming
Sub-Ohm Mesh Coil 1–3 weeks Drop in flavour and vapour
Disposable Internal Coil Lifetime of the disposable Burnt taste = time to replace device

Problem 3: Your Vape Is Gurgling

That wet, bubbly sound during a pull means e-liquid is pooling where it shouldn't usually in the airflow channel or around the coil.

1. Blow it out. Remove the pod or tank, wrap the mouthpiece in a clean tissue, and blow firmly from the bottom. This clears pooled liquid through the airflow channel.

2. Puff more gently. Aggressive, fast pulls flood the coil. Smooth, slower draws usually eliminate gurgling on their own.

3. Re-seat the coil or pod. A loose coil connection lets liquid slip past seals. Unscrew, dry, and reinstall snugly — don't overtighten.

4. Check airflow settings. If your device has adjustable airflow, opening it a bit can let pooled liquid evaporate during normal use.

Problem 4: Your Device Won't Fire

If the LED is blinking, dim, or your device isn't producing vapour at all, work through these in order.

1. Check the battery. Most LEDs blink rapidly to indicate low power. Charge with a proper USB-C cable for at least 30 minutes before testing again. Cheap or damaged cables are a surprisingly common cause of charging problems.

2. Clean the contacts. Both the device's pod connector and the pod's contact pins should be dry and clean. Wipe both with a dry cotton swab. E-liquid residue or condensation can prevent a proper connection.

3. Reseat the pod or tank. Remove it completely, then click it back in firmly. Magnetic pods sometimes don't seat properly on the first try.

4. Check for short-circuit warnings. If your device shows "Check Coil," "Atomizer Short," or similar, the coil isn't being recognized. Try a different coil or pod — if a known-good replacement also fails, the device itself may need service.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Replace

Most vape problems come down to four fixable causes: overfill, under-priming, worn coils, or pressure issues. Nine times out of ten, walking through the checks above will get the device working in five minutes.

But there are situations where the device itself is the problem. Replace your hardware if:

  • The battery no longer holds a charge or charges very slowly even with a known-good cable.
  • The device shows persistent error messages even with new coils and pods.
  • You see visible physical damage — cracks, dents, swollen battery, or scorching around the pod area.
  • The device has been dropped in water and stopped working after drying.

If you're past the warranty window and the device is more than a couple of years old, replacement is usually more economical than repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my coil is burnt or just needs priming?
If the burnt taste shows up on the very first puff of a new coil, it almost certainly wasn't primed. Drip 3–5 drops on the wicking holes, wait 5–10 minutes, and try again. If the burnt taste develops gradually over days of use, the coil is worn out and needs replacement. A primed-then-worn coil can also be confirmed visually — pull it out and check for dark buildup on the wicking material.
Why does my pod leak in my pocket but not on the desk?
Body heat and movement both contribute. A pod sitting upright on a desk has stable internal pressure and gravity working in its favour. In your pocket, the pod is warm, moving around, and often lying on its side — all of which can push e-liquid past seals. Carry pods upright when possible, and don't store them next to your phone (more heat).
Is gurgling dangerous?
No — gurgling itself is just e-liquid pooling where it shouldn't. It's annoying and wastes juice, but it doesn't damage the device. That said, if you get a mouthful of liquid (sometimes called "spitback"), spit it out and rinse — nicotine ingestion can cause nausea, especially with higher-strength salts.
How many drops of e-liquid do I need to prime a coil?
3–5 drops on each wicking hole for a standard pod coil, and 5–10 drops total for a larger sub-ohm coil. The cotton should look darker and saturated — not flooded with pooling liquid on top. Then fill the tank or pod, wait 5–10 minutes, and start at a lower wattage for the first few puffs before stepping up.
Can I fix a flooded coil, or do I need to replace it?
Often fixable. Remove the pod, blow firmly through the airflow with the mouthpiece wrapped in tissue, then let it sit upright for 5–10 minutes. If gurgling continues after that, the coil is over-saturated and you may need to remove some excess e-liquid. Only replace the coil if it's also producing burnt taste or visible damage.
Why does my new device feel weaker than my old one?
A few possibilities. New coils take 15–20 puffs to fully break in — flavour and vapour both improve after that. Check wattage settings (some devices ship at low default wattages). And confirm you're using the right pod for the device — the wrong coil resistance can underperform even at full power.
When should I just buy a new device?
If the battery no longer holds a charge, the device shows persistent errors with new coils and pods, or there's visible physical damage (cracks, swelling, scorch marks), it's time. For devices more than 2–3 years old, replacement is usually more economical than ongoing troubleshooting. Stop in or browse our pod systems and disposables.
