How to Prime a Vape Coil: And Why It Matters
Ever taken a fresh puff on a brand new coil and been hit with a harsh, burnt taste? Yeah. We hear about it every single day in our stores. It's one of the most common frustrations for vapers, and the good news is it's almost always preventable.
The fix? Prime your coil before you use it. It takes about 15 minutes, costs you nothing, and it's the difference between great flavour on your first puff and throwing out a coil you just bought. Here's exactly how to do it.
What Is Coil Priming?
Priming a coil means soaking the cotton wicking material with e-liquid before you fire the device. Vape coils work by heating a metal wire that's wrapped around absorbent cotton. When you fire the coil, the wire heats up and turns the e-liquid in that cotton into vapour.
If the cotton is dry when you fire the coil, even for a second, the heat scorches the wick instead of the liquid. That's where the burnt taste comes from. And once a coil is burnt, it's done. You can't fix it. You just have to replace it.
A few minutes of priming prevents all of this.
What You'll Need
Just three things: a new replacement coil, your vape tank or pod, and your e-liquid. That's it.
Step by Step: How to Prime Your Coil
Step 1: Look at Your New Coil
Pull your new coil out of the packaging and have a look at it. You'll see small cotton-filled holes or ports around the sides. These are the wicking holes where e-liquid gets into the coil. Remember where they are because they're the key to this whole process.
Step 2: Drip E-Liquid on the Cotton Ports
Using the tip of your e-liquid bottle, carefully drip 3 to 4 drops of e-liquid directly onto each wicking port on the side of the coil. Watch the cotton as you do this. You'll see it darken as it absorbs the liquid. That's what you want.
If your coil has an open top where you can see the cotton in the centre, add 2 to 3 more drops there as well. Don't rush it. Let each drop soak in before adding the next one.
One thing to watch for: if e-liquid starts pooling or running off the coil, you've added enough. Over-priming can cause flooding and leaking, so don't go overboard.
Step 3: Install the Coil and Fill Your Tank
Screw or push the primed coil into your tank or pod. Hand-tight is all you need here. Don't crank it down or you'll damage the threads.
Fill your tank with e-liquid as normal, making sure the liquid level covers the wicking ports on the coil. Then put the tank down and let it sit for 10 minutes. This lets the cotton soak up e-liquid from all sides.
I know it's tempting to skip the wait. Don't. It makes a real difference, especially with thicker high-VG e-liquids that take longer to absorb.
Step 4: Take a Few Primer Puffs (Don't Fire It)
Before you turn the device on, take 3 to 5 slow draws without pressing the fire button. If your device has adjustable airflow, cover the airflow holes with your finger while you do this. The suction pulls e-liquid up through the coil and pushes out any air pockets stuck in the cotton.
You might see small air bubbles rising in your tank. That's exactly what you want to see. It means liquid is moving in and air is moving out.
Step 5: Start Low and Work Your Way Up
Now you're ready to fire, but don't jump straight to your normal wattage. Start at the lowest wattage your coil supports. There's usually a recommended range printed on the coil itself.
Take 5 or 6 gentle puffs at the low setting, then bump it up by about 5 watts. Keep puffing and gradually stepping up until you reach your normal vaping wattage over the first 15 to 20 puffs. This break-in process helps the coil hit its stride without getting shocked by sudden high heat.
⚠️ 5 Common Mistakes That Kill Brand New Coils
| Mistake | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Firing right after installing | Dry cotton burns instantly. The coil is ruined before you've even started. |
| Skipping the 10 minute wait | The cotton isn't fully saturated. You get a burnt hit on your first puff and the damage is done. |
| Starting at full power | Thermal shock shortens coil life. The cotton and wire need time to settle in at lower temps first. |
| Not checking the wicking holes | If the ports aren't saturated, there's still dry cotton inside. Dry cotton + heat = burnt taste. |
| Over-tightening the coil | Damages the coil, strips the tank threading, and can cause leaking. Hand-tight is enough. |
How Long Should a Coil Last?
A coil that's been properly primed, used at the right wattage, and paired with decent e-liquid can last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on how much you vape. You'll know it's time for a new one when you start getting a persistent burnt taste, less vapour than usual, or you can see visible dark buildup on the coil head.
The single best thing you can do to make coils last longer is prime them properly every time. It takes a few minutes and saves you from burning through coils twice as fast.
The Quick Version
If you're in a rush, here's the whole process in five lines:
| Step | What to Do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drip 3 to 4 drops of e-liquid on each wicking port | 1 min |
| 2 | Install the coil and fill your tank | 2 min |
| 3 | Let the tank sit and soak | 10 min |
| 4 | Take 3 to 5 dry primer puffs (no fire) | 30 sec |
| 5 | Start low wattage and work up over 15 to 20 puffs | 2 min |
Once you do this a few times, it becomes second nature. You'll never go back to dry-hitting a fresh coil again.
