How to Prime a Vape Coil (And Why It Matters)

Ever taken a fresh puff on a brand-new coil and been hit with a harsh, burnt taste? That's one of the most common frustrations for vapers — and the good news is it's almost always preventable. The fix? Priming your coil before you use it.

In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly what coil priming is, why it's essential, and how to do it step by step so you get great flavour from the very first puff.

What Is Coil Priming?

Priming a coil means saturating its cotton wicking material with e-liquid before you fire the device for the first time. Vape coils work by heating a metal wire wrapped around an absorbent cotton wick. When you fire the coil, the heated wire vaporizes the e-liquid soaked into that cotton.

If the cotton is dry when you fire the coil — even for a second — the heat scorches the wick rather than the liquid. This creates that unmistakable burnt taste and permanently damages the coil, often requiring a replacement before you've even gotten started.

A few minutes of priming prevents all of this.

What You'll Need

  • A new replacement coil
  • Your vape tank or pod
  • Your e-liquid of choice

Step-by-Step: How to Prime Your Coil

Step 1: Examine the New Coil

Remove your new coil from its packaging and take a look at it. You'll notice small cotton-filled holes or ports around the sides — these are the wicking holes where e-liquid enters the coil. Keep these in mind, as they're the key to priming.

Step 2: Apply E-Liquid to the Cotton Ports

Using the tip of your e-liquid bottle, carefully drip 3–4 drops of e-liquid directly onto each wicking port on the side of the coil. Watch as the cotton slowly darkens — that's a sign it's absorbing the liquid.

If your coil has an open top (visible cotton at the center), add 2–3 additional drops there as well. Don't rush this step; let each drop soak in before adding more.

Tip: Don't over-saturate. If e-liquid is pooling or running off, you've added enough. Over-priming can cause flooding and leaking.

Step 3: Install the Coil and Fill Your Tank

Screw or push the primed coil into your tank or pod — hand-tight is all you need, no need to crank it down. Then fill your tank with e-liquid as normal, making sure the e-liquid level covers the wicking ports on the coil.

Once filled, let the tank sit for 10 minutes. This allows the cotton to fully soak up the e-liquid from all sides. It's tempting to skip this wait, but it makes a real difference — especially with thicker e-liquids.

Step 4: Take a Few Primer Puffs (No Firing)

Before turning on your device, take 3–5 slow draws without pressing the fire button (if your device has one). Cover the airflow holes with your finger as you do this. This draws e-liquid up through the coil using suction and helps dislodge any remaining air pockets in the cotton.

You may notice small air bubbles rising in your tank — that's exactly what you want to see. It means the liquid is moving in and air is moving out.

Step 5: Start at Low Power and Gradually Increase

Now you're ready to fire, but don't jump straight to your normal wattage. Start at the lowest wattage setting your coil supports (check the coil's recommended range, usually printed on the coil itself).

Take 5–6 gentle puffs at the low setting, then increase by about 5 watts. Continue puffing and gradually stepping up until you reach your normal vaping wattage over the first 15–20 puffs. This "break-in" process helps the coil reach its optimal performance without thermal shock.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Firing immediately after installing — always let the e-liquid soak in first
  • Skipping the wait time — 10 minutes makes a real difference, especially with high-VG liquids
  • Starting at full power — thermal shock can shorten coil life significantly
  • Forgetting to check the wicking holes — if they're not saturated, you risk a burnt hit
  • Over-tightening the coil — this can damage the coil and the tank threading

How Long Should a Coil Last?

A well-primed coil, used with the right wattage and quality e-liquid, can last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on how much you vape. Signs it's time for a replacement include a persistent burnt taste, reduced vapour production, and visible discolouration on the coil head.

Summary

Priming a vape coil takes less than 15 minutes and makes a massive difference in flavour quality and coil longevity. Here's the quick version:

  1. Drip e-liquid on all wicking ports
  2. Install the coil and fill the tank
  3. Wait 10 minutes
  4. Take 3–5 dry primer puffs
  5. Start low and work up to your normal wattage

That's it! Once it becomes habit, you'll never go back to dry-hitting a fresh coil again.
